Children of Punmu is a documentary video that takes a unique glimpse into Australia's Punmu Aboriginal Community, and the lives of the Martu Aborigines who moved back to live in the desert to educate their young people in the land of their ancestors. The documentary takes the viewer to the middle of Australia's Great Sandy Desert, chronicling the history of the Punmu Aboriginal community while looking into the modern lives of the young people of Punmu.
Children of Punmu shows the young people living their daily lives in the desert: hunting for Goanna lizards, picking bush tomatoes, going to school and playing softball. It also shows the conflict of an isolated Aboriginal desert community trying to return to the old ways while living in a world of canned food, television, and computers. The documentary looks at some of the painful history of the Martu, who were forced from the desert in the 1960's, and "re-educated" in Missions and government settlements. Children of Punmu is a documentary that is being produced because the Martu elders believed a video could help generations of young people learn the value of history and culture.
Children of Punmu is is currently in post-production. Upon completion, it will be a valuable video for teachers to share Australian Aboriginal culture with their students.
