About A Place Named Destiny

A Place Named Destiny is a 70-minute documentary that follows a diverse group of Oakland, California inner-city teenagers from auditions through stage production, in an after-school program that helps transform young people through performance art. The young people?s study of dance, theatre, spoken word, and martial arts is rooted in self-empowerment and the promotion of non-violence in a neighborhood in which violence and absent parents are part of the daily landscape. The young people in the film speak about acknowledged but rarely addressed issues in our culture such as racism, homophobia, broken families and violence. A Place Named Destiny shows that rather than responding to these challenges with violence and frustration, a simple arts program can help young people deal with these problems through self-expression.
